Predictions suggest that the eCommerce market in the country is likely to touch 7 trillion in the next three years. This makes one thing clear and that is the surge in online buying that is being seen nationwide right now is going to stay. Retail business is going to suffer, but for now, eCommerce is on the rise.

A lot of surveys and studies have been conducted on this development since the early days of pandemic in India. The intelligence gathered by these studies show that the national eCommerce market has received an indubitable positive push during the quarantine.

Prior to the pandemic, it was predicted that the market is set to experience a growth of 19.6% since last year through 2023. That predicted rate has now shot up to 25.9% at least. With people doing most of their shopping online at this time in their bid to avoid disease vectors like bazaars, ATMs, stores, etc., this spike was inevitable.

So, although consumer spending has gone down by a significant margin in the Covid crisis in India, that has in large parts been compensated by the hike in people’s online spending.

Food and beverage is one section where sales have gone up online. During quarantine, people are also buying gifts and specialty items on relevant eCommerce websites to ensure timely delivery. More people are ordering fineries like apparels and accessories online, with no access to physical stores. Home and garden equipment too are selling better online. Lastly, online sale of games and toys too have picked up since the lockdown.
